About the Institute
The Beckman Laser Institute and Medical Clinic was developed through a collaboration between Dr. Michael Berns at the University of California, Irvine and Dr. Arnold Beckman. The revolutionary idea behind the Institute was to use lasers to study the basic biology of cells and apply the knowledge gained from the studies to understand, diagnose and treat disease. The Institute was purposely designed and built to include basic cellular and biochemistry, engineering and histopathology laboratories, and a patient clinic.
By including these features – under one collaborative umbrella – the Institute fosters collaboration between diverse groups of individuals: basic scientists, engineers and clinicians. The UCI location is a unique translational technology center, moving new technologies rapidly from the laboratory benchtop to the patient bedside.
