2018 BYI Chen Li Shares Video Press Release of His Snake Robot
2018 Beckman Young Investigator Chen Li (Johns Hopkins University) shares a video press release of the robot his lab built which has snake like characteristics. "They first studied the King Snake to emulate its partitioned gait which ungulates laterally to climb steps while cantilevering. They built a robot and designed a controlled algorithm to generate this wave like oscillation pattern. They found when they added a car-like suspension (a spring between the body and wheels) it allowed the wheels to maintain good contact no matter how much the body wobbled. By doing that their robot had better performance than most previous snake robots. It is able to traverse large steps at high probability." However, ultimately their goal is to traverse forest floor or earthquake rebel."
