Beckman Foundation Launches New High School Scholarship Program
Irvine and Tustin High Schoolers Receive First Invites to Compete for Awards Up to $16,000
The Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation, which provides grants to support young scientists today for tomorrow’s breakthrough discoveries, announced the launch of a local scholarship program for high school science students in Irvine and Tustin Unified School Districts within Orange County. The new Orange County Beckman Legacy Award is an invitation-only program that provides hands-on, mentored laboratory experiences for high school science students with opportunities to win one-time college tuition awards of up to $16,000. Students from Beckman, Northwood, Portola and University High Schools will be eligible to compete in the inaugural 2020 program cycle.
“We are excited to introduce a new generation of students to the pioneering technology work of Dr. Arnold O. Beckman, help springboard their curiosity about science from high school into college, and encourage them to pursue science-based careers.
Applicants will complete an instrument build and a series of experiments inspired by Dr. Beckman’s spectrophotometer, along with essay-style questions. Step one is the submission of a Letter of Intent (LOI) during Junior year of high school. Eligible students will then complete and submit the Full Application during Senior year, with awards announced in May 2020. Program details, important dates and eligibility requirements are listed on the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation website.
The following high schools will be eligible to compete in the inaugural 2020 program cycle:
- Beckman High School
- Northwood High School
- Portola High School
- University High School
“Dr. Beckman and his wife Mabel spent much of their life together in Orange County as he built a billion-dollar, high-tech corporation and ultimately established the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation; we’re proud to carry his legacy forward by helping local students become Orange County’s next Arnold Beckmans.
